چکیده

Presented here are results of simulations of neutron background performed for a time projection chamber acting as a particle dark matter detector in an underground laboratory. The investigated background includes neutrons from rock and detector components, generated via spontaneous fission and (α,n) reactions, as well as those due to cosmic-ray muons. Neutrons were propagated to the sensitive volume of the detector and the nuclear recoil spectra were calculated. Methods of neutron background suppression were also examined and limitations to the sensitivity of a gaseous dark matter detector are discussed. Results indicate that neutrons should not limit sensitivity to WIMP-nucleon interactions down to a level of (1− 3)× 10 pb in a 10 kg detector.

Neutron background in large-scale xenon detectors for dark matter searches

Simulations of the neutron background for future large-scale particle dark matter detectors are presented. Neutrons were generated in rock and detector elements via spontaneous fission and (α,n) reactions, and by cosmic-ray muons. The simulation techniques and results are discussed in the context of the expected sensitivity of a generic liquid xenon dark matter detector. Methods of neutron back...

PMT Calibration in the XENON 1T Demonstrator

XENON Dark Matter Project searches for the dark matter candidate, the Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMPs). All XENON experiments use a time projection chamber (TPC) to detect nuclear recoils resulting from WIMP-nuclei scattering. Photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) read out the signal from the scintillation and ionization of the xenon triggered by the nuclear recoils. This paper details PMT ga...

Updates from the Dark Matter Time Projection Chamber Group (DMTPC)

The Dark Matter Time Projection Chamber (DMTPC) collaboration has developed a series of gas-based detectors with the goal of detecting the directional anisotropy of dark-matter-induced nuclear recoils. Here, we report on recent progress from the DMPTC group, focusing on the surface operation of the 4shooter detector.

Two-Phase Xenon Time Projection Chambers for WIMP Searches and Other Applications

Astronomical evidence indicates that 23 % of the energy density in the universe is comprised of some form of non-standard, non-baryonic matter that has yet to be observed. One of the predominant theories is that dark matter consists of WIMPs (Weakly Interacting Massive Particles), so named because they do not interact electromagnetically or through the strong nuclear force. In direct dark matte...

A detection system to measure muon-induced neutrons for direct Dark Matter searches

Muon-induced neutrons constitute a prominent background component in a number of low count rate experiments, namely direct searches for Dark Matter. In this work we describe a neutron detector to measure this background in an underground laboratory, the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane. The system is based on 1 m3 of Gd-loaded scintillator and it is linked with the muon veto of the EDELWEISS-II...
